Lady Panthers fall to Warriors in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group II semifinals

November 16, 2012

Striker Aubry Jones scored an overtime goal in the 85th minute to lead the fourteenth-seeded Manasqun Warriors to a 3-2 road victory over seventh-seeded Point Pleasant Boro Panthers, yesterday, in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group II tournament semifinals.

Point Boro senior Kerry Malleck scored both goals for Point Pleasant, which included one in the 71st minute to send the game into overtime. Caroline Duerr and Courtney Hagaman also punched in goals for Manasquan. The Manasquan Warriors will play either top-seeded Bordentown or fifth-seeded Rumson. The semifinal game between the two teams will be played at 2 p.m. today. Here is post game comments from the Point Boro soccer team about the season-ending loss.

Kerry Malleck

On how close the team has been this year…

We didn’t realize how close we were until it came down to the end of the season. Then, we thought about leaving each other. It is going to be tough leaving this team and going to college next year.

On scoring two goals…

I just stepped up more because I didn’t want the soccer season to end. I knew once we lost season would be over.

On how the team improved throughout the year…

I think people underestimated us a lot. We didn’t prove ourselves in the beginning but did in the second half of the season. We stepped up in states.

Point Boro head coach Mike Edolo

On Kerry Malleck scoring two goals….

When Kerry wants to she is the best player on the field every game. Tonight was just a testament to her hard work. Both goals she just put herself in the right place at the right time and finished. She realized tonight the potential that she had and deserved the two goals tonight. It was just unfortunate as a team we couldn’t get that third one and win the game.

On the team this year…

They are such a strong group and great leaders. They are great people. It was nice to see a team that never had any problems. They never had any issues and were a real family. It was special.

On the run in the state playoffs, which included an upset win over second-seeded Carteret…

To make run like that a little bit of luck has to be on your side. But, for me, I say luck is just a little bit of hard work. It would have been nice to get to the finals but I am proud of everything our team accomplished this year. They deserved every bit of success that they had.
