Postgame notebook: Point Boro field hockey vs. Manasquan

September 21, 2012

The Point Boro field hockey team fell short to Manasquan High School on the road today, 3-0. The Warriors outshot the Panthers 20-6. Kaitlyn Anderson had a goal and two assists. Kaleigh Jordan and Paige Burkard also scored. Point Boro goalie Amy Liantonio faced a lot of traffic in front of her net and made 17 saves. The Manasquan field hockey team only has one loss this season, a 5-1 result to Holmdel on the road. What made this game particularly interesting is Point Boro head coach Melissa Gibbs used to coach under current Manasquan head coach Pam Cosse. Gibbs is also a Manasquan High School graduate. Here is what both coaches had to say following the game…

On the losing a non-divisonal game…

To us every single game matters, whether it is for the conference, division, whatever. We want to be high up in the ranks for the state tournament and the Shore Conference Tournament. I told them we have to take every game for the best seed in the two tournaments (shore conference and states). We want to win. I thought today we would shake off that first goal that was scored on us, but we did not play our game today. We did not play Point Boro field hockey.

On being ready to play Manasquan…

We were pumped up for this game and our players knew how much this game meant to me personally. It means a lot to them too because they split with them last year, winning one game and losing one. I don’t know what it is. We have good days and bad days. But, Manasquan (field) hockey did a great job today — without a doubt.

On playing on the road…

We played home most of games so we are used to playing on our home turf. So, now we are on the road a lot. We have to adjust to how the field is and how other teams play. We just have a lot of adjusting to do. It just is what it is. We need to work on some stuff and get ready for Manchester. I am not the kind of coach to get mad or angry. We will just focus on one game at a time. We need to cut in front of the ball and get rid of it sooner. We also need to talk. Our girls are so quiet and they are such a close group. We need to communicate on the field. They know how to do all of that. They are such talented girls.

On pumping up her team to play against a team like Point Boro…

It is hard for me to contain about how excited I am about field hockey and coaching. I really love it. I have a very laid back group of kids and do not want to scare them. I want them to see my level of passion about the game. Sometimes I have to be a little bit more goofy then serious to get them to laugh and loosen up. I wanted to psych them up for the game today and I am really proud of the girls. They did a really good job today. We kind of dominated.

On coaching against her former assistant…

I wish her the best of luck and I did not know she even took over the program. I congratulated her on moving up in rank. She is very enthusiastic and is extremely well-liked by the girls.
